From the May - June 2007 Issue
Maryland Eastern Shore Black Medical Professionals
Maryland African American Pride Magazine is proud to present its 2007 Special Issue on Black Health.
We spotlight The Shore's Black health professionals and discuss some of the issues concerning the health of the Shore's Slack population. The unhealthy lifestyles of much of the Black population on The Shore and across the Nation is a major contributor to the fact that African Americans are more likely to have ailments than their white counterparts. The leading causes of deaths among African Americans on The Shore are cardiovascular diseases (CVD), cancer, and stroke. They outrank accidents and homicides by far. Other major problems include diabetes, asthma, and AIDS. In each category, the death rate is higher among African Americans than whites. In most of the cases, our lifestyles make us more likely to have these diseases than other races. Alcohol and drug abuse, smoking, overeating, lack of exercise, and poor diets make us more susceptible to diseases. To make matters worse, African Americans tend to seek medical attention less. African American males are particularly guilty of this. So we find out late that there is a medical problem and then it is more difficult to treat. The good news is that health officials are more aware of the problem and are campaigning to make us more aware of the need for healthier living habits.
